BIG JAY MC NEELY (USA) - The King Of The Honkers!

Tenor saxophonist Cecil "Big Jay" McNeely (born 1927!!) has been "the king of the honkers" for over 50 years, and he's still going strong. In 1948 he record for Savoy Records and had his first no.1 hit record "Deacon's Hop", For the next several years, Big Jay, according to The New Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll, "was famed for his playing-on-his-back acrobatics and his raw, hard-swinging playing."During his act he'd leave the stage, walk across the top of the bar, and sometimes walk out the door of the club, often with a line of people following him. In 1959 Big Jay enjoyed his biggest hit, a blues ballad called "There Is Something on Your Mind," featuring Haywood "Little Sonny" Warner on vocals. The record stayed on the R&B charts for six months and reached as high as #44 pop. Other artists who have recorded Big Jay's song include B.B. King, Etta James, Freddy Fender, The Hollywood Flames, Gene Vincent, Albert King and Professor LonghairBig Jay retired from full-time music for 20 years, but in 1983 he returned to performing and hasn't looked back. In 1987 he played in a blues jam with B.B. King, Robert Cray, Etta James, Albert King, Junior Wells and others on the internationally-televised Grammy Awards. In 2000 the Experience Music Project in Seattle installed a special Big Jay McNeely exhibit that includes his original Conn saxophone; the Smithsonian magazine put the horn on its June 2000 issue cover, along with Jimi Hendrix's hat, Janis Jopin's feather boa, and Eric Clapton's Stratocaster. Big Jay isalso the subject of Jim Dawson's Nervous Man Nervous: Big Jay McNeely & the Rise of the Honking Tenor Saxophone (Big Nickel Press, 1995),the only book ever written about the R&B sax and its influences. These days Big Jay McNeely spends a good deal of time touring around the globe, honking and screamin' !!!

JZZZZZP - Jumpjazzz \ jive \ swing

For more info check:

www.myspace.com/jackamo

Jzzzzzp is active since 2001 as a 5-piece jump-jive band. Jzzzzzp’s members are experienced Haarlem-based musicians who have cut their teeth on a variety of musical styles; from rock to ska, from punk to hot-club-de france; from dance to mainstream jazz. The love of old jazz in the tradition of Louis Jordan, Slim and Slam, Big Jay McNeely and Louis Prima ( among others) is what brings the band together. Jzzzzzp ‘s stompin’ and swingin’ performances are filled with exciting solos from saxophonist Thomas “ Tommy Tornado” Streutgers. Some tunes have a swinging acoustic feel and some have a complete jazz-abandonment; and the show is sure to have a healthy dose of humor.Or as the Belgians have written: “Tight swing jazz with a touch of exotica!” Their well-received debut-demo cd and follow-up full-length cd Vledder Bop (Rockhouse Rec.) resulted in numerous performances at jazz and blues festivals, cafes, clubs and parties. The music magazine Fret wrote: “Within 3 songs, you hear quality; and musicians that are enjoying themselves! I know for sure they’ll soon leave smoky cafes behind and are headed for big things…..” Performances at festivals and clubs in Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland soon followed. After Jzzzzzp released a live DVD (produced in 2006) came a tour in Denmark in 2007.In 2007 and 2008, Jzzzzzp hooked up with Legendary saxophonist Big Jay McNeely (USA) and together they performed in Belgium and The Netherlands.(also on TV "Vrije Geluiden - VPRO) Mc- Neely is one of the true pioneers in traditional R&B and rock ‘n roll. In 1949 he scored a number-1 hit on the R&B charts with his tune “Deacon’s Hop.”The tour with Big Jay, with Jzzzzzp as backing-band, was a big success. Following this period “on the road” with Big Jay and other performances in andoutside of The Netherlands, Jzzzzzp has been busy recording a new cd entitled “Swinging All Day.” The new cd was produced in the old-school feel, using analog rather than digital and has an authentic sound and feel. The recording studio they worked at belongs to the High Notes ska band and is situated beneath a bridge over a canal in central Amsterdam, formerly the site of a local jail! Each take was done live with the full band, following theshouted credo “roll tape,” supplemented with a few overdubs by guest musicians. Also making an appearance was the High Notes Hammond B3 organ. In-between takes, the studio doors swung open to let in the sunlight and reveal glimpses of passing canal boats filled with tourists and theircameras. Quite the place to make a record! The result: an unspliced offering from a live-sounding band, varying from rock‘n roll to swing to mambo and more ……well- suited coming from a band known for blending these traditional styles into their own distinct sound.Soon ready to listen in your own home
